Menu System

Thursday 10 December, 2009

A menu system is integrated with the I-Metrics CMS. Thie page describes the functionality and configuration detains of the navigation menu.

First of all the site owner needs to create the top-menu entries. The top-menu entries can be created from the Content Management which is located under the admin -> Site Content -> Content Management

The content management section lists all the collections you have created for your store. Each collection can be added to the menu and show as a top-level navigation entry. Depending on the width of the menu the top entries should be limited in terms of label characters and number, otherwise the menu will wrap into separate lines and the front-end template will seem broken. In addition top level navigation entries in the menu should represent the most important areas of your site. Therefore you should not try to add everything under the menu bar.

content management controllerThe framework uses a pre-defined mixed collection to generate the menu entries. This collection is also accessible from the Content Management section. The collection's name is called Menu Controller. Select the menu controller by clicking the folder icon or click select the row and click details. This process will switch the Site Content list to the next level showing the assignment of entries to the collection. Therefore you should see another page listing the entries that are currently assigned to the menu bar. So let's assume you wanted to add a new collection that will appear on the menu bar of the front end.

Assigned Content ColelctionsIn this same page that lists the menu entries near the bottom there is a button called entries. Click the entries button to switch to entries level for the selected collection. A list of the available collections should appear. Select the footer by ticking the checkbox on the left and then click insert. This process will add the footer collection as part of the menu entries. Following the insert operation the system will switch you back to the previous level automatically. From there you should see the new entry called footer and should appear as the first entry in the list.

So now we need to setup the order on how the menu entries will appear on the front end. Set the Sequence column to a high value let say 10. Then tick the checkbox on the left side to mark the entry for update and finally hit the update button. Right after the process the footer zone should be listed as the last entry in the list.

Finally verify the changes have an effect by visiting the front end of the website and check the top navigation entries in the menu bar.
